The Black List: “The descriptive text uses sensory detail very well to add texture; the line about the air in the bookstore looking how leather smells is particularly evocative. The dialogue throughout it sharp, witty, and has the ring of truth to it based on the characters and their backgrounds. The flashback scenes hit all the right details in terms of conveying the specific party scene and laissez-faire atmosphere. Daniel's feelings about Marty talking up his crush on the butcher, especially as expressed to Simon when he's found, are heartbreaking in terms of a character coming to terms with the balance of desire and dignity as they approach old age. The intermingling of Simon and Daniel's younger selves with their present selves on the dance floor is powerful and moving.”
